Roofing · 09

Heavier, longer-lived, and unforgiving of a bad install.

Tile and slate outlast everything else on a house, provided whoever works on them understands what they’re standing on.

Tile & slate

A different roof, and a different set of rules.

Tile and slate carry serious weight, break under careless footfall, and rely on the underlayment beneath them far more than a shingle roof does. Most of the damage we get called to repair was caused by someone walking it wrong.

01
Repair
Cracked, slipped and missing pieces replaced and re-secured, matched to what’s already up there. Far cheaper than a re-roof and usually all that’s needed.
Piece replacement · Re-securing · Matching existing · Careful access
02
Underlayment
On tile and slate the waterproofing layer underneath is doing most of the work. When a roof this old leaks, the underlayment has usually failed while the tile is still fine.
Underlayment replacement · Tile lift & reset · Valley & flashing renewal
03
Structure
These systems are heavy. Framing and decking get checked for deflection and rot before anything goes back down.
Load check · Rafter & decking inspection · Deflection
04
Full replacement
Complete tile and slate replacement where the system is past repair, including the flashing and metalwork around chimneys and valleys.
Full replacement · Copper flashing · Chimney detailing
Detailing

The metalwork matters more on a roof like this.

Tile and slate roofs live long enough that cheap flashing fails several times over before the roof does. We fabricate and fit copper where it makes sense.

Three-piece copper chimney caps, valley metal and counter flashing that lasts as long as the roof around it.
